How do I use this site?

From the Give or Take homepage page choose the area that covers where you live.

If you want to give an item (or many items) use the red box on the right.

If you are looking for something, use the yellow box on the left.

Searching

You can look for a specific item by looking in the relevant sections. You can also enter your postcode and search for all items that are available within a given radius of your house (1 mile, 5 miles, 10 miles).

Giving

I am giving: Write the name of the type of thing you are offering.
It goes in this section: Please make sure you put the right item in the right section.
Description: Here you can write a long description of the item. Remember to say how old it is, what condition it is in, and any other details such as size, colour. Perhaps you want to say why you are giving the item away.

For example a good description of a bed could be...

"Double mattress and bed base. 3 years old. Good clean condition. Mattress blue and base white wood. Very comfy"

If you have any restrictions you can put them here. For example "ring after 8pm only" or "only ring at the weekends" or "must go by Saturday 16th" if you have a deadline.

Your name: It doesn't have to be your full name. Bob or Fatima or Debra will do.
Your phone number: Make sure you have the correct number here.
My email: If you would prefer, you can let people contact you by email only. If you don't have an email address, don't worry. Just leave this bit blank.
I can deliver: If you have the ability to deliver, let people know here. If you can't deliver then you have to arrange a collection time with the taker.
Your Postcode: Your postcode is used for searching and is not visible on the site.
The Security Code: A six letter/digit code to prevent any automated listings.

Now you can click the submit button.

If you have something else to give, use the form again (be careful you put the item in the right section). If not, you can follow the link at the top to see your advert.

Removal of item

If you have given us an email address, you will receive an email from us which includes a link. If you click this, the item will be removed from the site. If not, your advert will stay up for 2 weeks.

Taking

Look through the sections until you see an item you like. Contact the person giving the item directly either by telephone or by email. You can then arrange to see the item. Please do not ring us unless you have a complaint to make. Remember to check the item thoroughly before you accept. If you need this item but the giver cannot deliver and you cannot collect, we may be able to help: dependant on the circumstances.

Looking

I need: write here the name of the thing you are looking for.
It goes in this section: Please make sure you put the right item in the right section.
Description: Here you can write a long description of the item you need. Remember to say how old it should be, what condition it should be in, and any other details you need such as size, colour. Perhaps you want to say why you are looking for the item.

For example a good description of a settee could be..

"3 seat settee needed. Red or pink. Plain colour if possible. Washable covers. For childrens playroom."

If you have any restriction you can put them here. For example "ring after 8pm only" or "only ring at the weekends".

Your name: It doesn't have to be your full name. Bob or Fatima or Debra will do.
Your phone number: Make sure you have the correct number here.
My email: If you would prefer, you can let people contact you by email only. If you don't have an email address, don't worry. Just leave this bit blank.
I can collect: If you have the ability to collect, let people know here. If you can't collect then you have to arrange a delivery time with the giver.
Your postcode: Your postcode is used for searching and is not visible on the site.
The Security Code: A six letter/digit code to prevent any automated listings.

Now you can click the submit button.

If you have something else you are looking for, use the form again (be careful you put the item in the right section). If not, you can follow the link at the top to see your advert.

Removal of item

If you have given us an email address, you will receive an email from us which includes a link. If you click this, the item will be removed from the site. If not, your advert will stay up for 2 weeks.

What things can I give?
You can give almost anything you want! As long as the item can be used by someone else, you can use this site to give it away.

Things you can't give away are hazardous or toxic items (such as fireworks, chemicals, broken electrical items), illegal goods (weapons, drugs, anything it is illegal to sell) and items that are just no use to anyone.

If you want to give away something that is broken, make sure you say that it is broken in the description. Someone may be able to fix it or can use the parts for something else.

If you have large broken items (wardrobes with doors missing, chairs with legs missing etc etc) which you want to get rid of, ring Clarence on 0800 232323. Clarence is the waste collection scheme run by Waltham Forest.

Dealers
It may be that you are contacted by someone who you think is a dealer. If you are uncomfortable with this you can state in the description that the item should only go to a community group or voluntary organisation. You can then request they bring a sheet of headed notepaper with them.

From FRP's point of view, the less that goes into the waste stream the better. If someone wants to take an item to sell at a boot sale or in a shop, then at least the item is being re-used and has a longer life than if you threw it away. Look at them as a modern day rag and bone men. But we understand if you object to giving to dealers and it's your right to specify who you want to receive your gift.

Taking : what should I look for?
Before you take something always give it a good look over. Test it out. If it's a chair, sit on it. If it's a bed, lay on it. Be sensible and be cautious.

Soft furniture: check to see that there is a fire safety label.

Electrical items: We strongly advise you to have all electrical items checked over by a qualified electrician before you accept them.

If someone has advertised an item on this site but tries to ask you for money when you go to see it, let us know and we will try to prevent them from advertising again.
